Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has reported higher earnings from the sale of surplus electricity in the open market, receiving an additional ₹2.31 per unit above the standard realization rate.

The state, which generates a significant amount of electricity through its hydropower projects, often produces more power than it consumes during peak generation periods. Instead of allowing this excess electricity to remain unused, the government sold it through power exchanges and the open electricity market, where rates were more favorable.

According to officials, the strategy enabled the state to secure better prices compared to regular power sale arrangements. For every unit of surplus electricity sold, Himachal Pradesh earned an extra ₹2.31, resulting in increased revenue for the state exchequer.

The additional income comes at a time when the government is looking to strengthen its financial position and maximize returns from the hydropower sector, one of Himachal Pradesh’s most important revenue-generating industries.

Officials said that selling power in the open market allows the state to take advantage of periods when electricity demand and prices are high across the country. This helps generate more income than traditional power sale mechanisms.

Energy experts believe that efficient power trading and better market participation could further increase Himachal Pradesh’s earnings in the coming years, especially as electricity demand continues to grow.
