Residents and tourists in Himachal Pradesh are advised to take extra precautions today as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for eight districts across the state. While the mountains are often a summer refuge, current weather patterns have pushed temperatures significantly above normal levels.

Which districts are affected?

The weather department has flagged the following regions where residents should prepare for intense heat today:

  1. Una
  2. Bilaspur
  3. Hamirpur
  4. Kangra
  5. Shimla
  6. Solan
  7. Sirmaur

A Relief is on the Horizon

If you are struggling with the soaring mercury, there is good news. Weather experts predict a change in conditions starting May 28. A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to become active over the region, which will likely bring much-needed relief in the form of:

  • Light to moderate rainfall
  • Thunderstorms
  • Strong, gusty winds
  • Isolated hailstorms

The Met Department has already issued an orange alert for hailstorms and lightning in several parts of the state for May 28 and 29, signaling a transition from heat to cooler, albeit unstable, weather.

How to Stay Safe During a Heatwave

With temperatures running 2 to 4°C above normal in many places, it is vital to prioritize your health:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Include ORS, lassi, or coconut water to maintain electrolyte balance.
  2. Avoid Peak Hours: Try to limit outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM when the sun is at its strongest.
  3. Dress Smartly: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored cotton clothing that allows your skin to breathe.
  4. Cover Up: If you must head out, wear a hat, use an umbrella, or cover your head with a scarf to protect yourself from direct sun exposure.
  5. Look Out for Symptoms: Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, or rapid heartbeat. If you experience these, move to a cool, shaded area immediately and seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

Stay informed and stay safe! Keep checking local meteorological reports for the most recent updates on the changing weather conditions in your specific area.
